Just saw this on the street in Kyoto, looked cool and loved by its owner, but what is it?
I’m guessing it’s a simple Kei car modified for racing style. But could it actually have any real street cred, like a Mini?

It’s a Daihatsu Mira Gino actually! The L700 Mira (which this is), itself, looks different, but the Gino was a variant done up from the factory to look classic Mini Cooper-style! Kei cars, yes, so 660cc engines. They were mostly FWD with AWD as an option and some variants were naturally aspirated while others were turbo. There was also a far less popular/common 1.0L engine offered as well, but Kei class cars come with tax breaks in Japan, so there are not many 1.0L cars around as they negate that tax break.
Normal Mira of that generation:

If you want some more info, check out this recent video from PacificCoastAuto - they make videos of a lot of the JDM cars they export worldwide and this one was going to Canada!

I saw zero Paos while in Japan. I've seen 2 in the US, though!

Maybe they are exporting them all. Ten years ago those and the figaro variation were all over. The Dihatsu mini clone has been pretty popular too, that was a pretty hot time for retro cars.
